Physical Protection Group Higher Technologist/Engineer

Job Description

The salary for this position is £55,469, which will increase annually until reaching £60,507. Additionally, there is a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

As the Higher Technologist/Engineer in our Physical Protection Group (PPG), your role will involve using your engineering skills to ensure our officers have the best protection schemes. This includes developing effective defenses such as vehicle armor, body armor, and helmets. You will also be involved in exploring new ways to combat physical threats.

The Physical Protection Group is responsible for protecting over 30,000 officers and up to 15,000 staff. This involves using science and engineering to evaluate threats and assess potential solutions, including ballistics and bladed weapons.

As part of the PPG team, you will play a vital role in planning trials to test prototypes and off-the-shelf products. You will also be responsible for recording data and summarizing the results. It is important that you can use scientific instrumentation and work well as part of a team. This role may also require travel and occasional work outside of Greater London.

Physical Protection Group is under the Threat Mitigation Technologies (TMT) division, which aims to provide engineering and scientific support to front-line MPS operations. This includes mitigating threats from terrorism, extremism, and serious crime.

Requirements for this role include a qualification (ideally degree-level) in engineering or a relevant science subject, extensive knowledge and experience in impact testing and kinematics, and knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and material properties. Experience in armor and/or automotive engineering would be advantageous. Additionally, you should have experience in running trials, using instrumentation, recording data, and writing reports. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.

Key experience and skills required for this role include extensive experience in working on technical projects, including planning and running trials, managing complex projects, designing, researching, and developing capabilities. You should also have the ability to acquire, analyze, and report information accurately, present information confidently to various stakeholders, and have managerial experience. Experience with budgets, financial reporting, and quality management systems (such as ISO9001) is beneficial.
